The Chinese zodiac is a cultural tradition, shared here for reflection, not as a prediction or a Buddhist teaching.
The Snake in Chinese tradition
The Snake is sixth in the cycle. In Chinese tradition it is linked with wisdom, mystery and quiet perception, the one who watches carefully before moving. It is sometimes called the "little dragon."
Traits traditionally linked with the Snake
Tradition describes people born in Snake years as:
- Wise and perceptive
- Calm and composed
- Intuitive about people
- Elegant in how they work
And, like everyone, with a few growing edges:
- Can keep feelings hidden
- May be slow to trust
- Can hold on to old hurts
Treat these as a mirror, not a destiny. In the Buddhist view, character grows from what we intend and do each day.
Snake years
The zodiac year begins at the Lunar New Year, in late January or February. If your birthday falls before that date, your animal is the one from the year before.

Compatible animals, in tradition
Tradition groups the animals into four "trines" of natural allies. The Snake's trine is the Ox and the Rooster. Its "secret friend" is the Monkey, and the sign said to clash with it is the Pig, six places away in the cycle. These pairings are folklore; any two people can grow a good friendship with patience and care.
A practice for the Snake
A naturally calm mind takes well to meditation. Five minutes with the breath can turn quiet perception into real clarity.
Deepen your calm: five minutes of breath meditation. Try meditation for beginners.
