What Is Noble Silence? Meaning and How to Keep It

1 min read · Updated

In short: noble silence is the silence kept on a meditation retreat: no talking, gestures, notes or eye contact with other meditators, so each person can turn inward. The term comes from the early teachings, where the Buddha tells monks to either discuss the Dhamma or keep noble silence (MN 26). You can still speak to the teacher and the manager.

What is and is not allowed?

  • Not allowed: talking with other meditators, gestures, notes, eye contact, phones, reading and writing (on most silent retreats).
  • Allowed: questions to the teacher at set times, and practical or health matters with the course manager.
  • Chanting and talks led by the teacher continue as part of the schedule.

Why keep silence?

Most of our mental energy goes into speaking, planning what to say, and reading other people. Silence takes that away. With nothing to manage, the mind settles faster, and you see your own habits more clearly. It also protects the people around you: no one has to respond to you.

Tips for your first silent retreat

  1. Tell family and friends you will be out of contact, and leave the centre's emergency number.
  2. Keep your eyes down when walking; it makes silence feel natural.
  3. When you feel the urge to talk, notice it, and return to the breath.
  4. Expect the urge to speak to peak on days 2 and 3, then fade.
  5. On the last day, ease back into talking slowly.

Questions people ask

What does noble silence mean?

Silence of body, speech and mind: no talking, no gestures, no notes and, on many retreats, no eye contact with other meditators. In the suttas the Buddha tells monks gathered together to either discuss the teaching or keep noble silence.

Can I talk to the teacher during noble silence?

Yes. On most retreats you may speak to the teacher about your practice and to the manager about practical needs or health.

Is noble silence hard?

Usually easier than people expect. The first day can feel strange; after that most people find silence restful, because there is nothing to perform for anyone.
