The place
The Pacific Hermitage says it is a small community of Theravada Buddhist monks beside Jewett Creek, established in 2010 as a branch of Abhayagiri Monastery after lay Buddhists asked for monastic teachers in the region. It is intended as a place of solitude for meditation, study and simple living.
The monks walk daily through White Salmon to receive food offerings for their one meal, and are available to teach, answer questions and lead meditation locally.
What it offers
- Meal offerings from lay supporters; its site suggests offering in groups with a male present when only one monk is in residence.
- Festivals such as Asalha Puja and the annual Pah Bah.
- A planned Monks' Retreat House, funded by donations.
Before you go
- The site says it cannot host overnight guests and has no monastic training programme; for residential retreats it points to Abhayagiri or Temple Forest Monastery.
- Read what Theravada Buddhism is and temple etiquette.
- See the Washington directory and pacifichermitage.org.
