IMCW says it was founded in 1997 by Tara Brach and supports people "at every stage of the path of practice" in the Buddhist tradition of Insight Meditation (Vipassana). Its site describes beginners and long-time practitioners as equally welcome.

IMCW is also the steward of Seven Oaks Retreat Center, in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, which offers residential retreats.
