The place
The Greater Boston Zen Community, formerly the Greater Boston Zen Center, describes itself as a sangha of people who aim to live awakened lives through Zen practice. It offers regular practice, instruction, discussion groups and occasional retreats.
Its site says it rejects the idea that a sangha must be guided by a special "Zen Master" or Roshi, and is instead led by an elected board; practice leaders and adjunct teachers are described as Zen learners further along the path. It also studies the Zen ethical teachings.
What it offers
- Tuesday evening practice, hybrid: at King's Chapel Parish House in downtown Boston and on Zoom. It includes chanting, walking meditation and at least one period of silent seated meditation.
- Other weekly and monthly activities online only.
- A book group for aging Zen learners and a 12-week precepts discussion group a few times a year.
- A podcast series of talks.
Before you go
- Read zazen for beginners and what Zen is.
- See the Massachusetts directory.
- Check the schedule on the community's own site.
