Seven simple evening rituals that help you wind down and end the day calmly: from putting the day down on paper to a two-minute gratitude practice. No apps or gadgets needed.

Peaceful sleep often starts long before bed. When the day ends with an inbox and a scrolling phone, the mind carries it into the night. An evening ritual is a small, repeated signal that the day is over. Here are seven gentle habits; pick two or three and keep them simple.

1. Put the day down on paper

Write the three things you will do first tomorrow, then close the notebook. Unfinished tasks are easier to let go of once they live somewhere other than your head.

2. Set a "last screen" time

Choose a time after which work messages and news wait until morning. Many people charge their phone outside the bedroom to make this easier.

3. Change the light

Turn off bright overhead lights and use a lamp. A dimmer room tells you, without words, that the day is turning into night.

4. Do one slow, ordinary thing

Make tea, wash your face, fold a few clothes. Do it slowly and give it your full attention. Small tasks done mindfully are a quiet bridge between the busy day and rest.

5. Breathe out longer than you breathe in

Sit on the edge of your bed for two minutes. Let each out-breath be a little longer than the in-breath. You do not need to count; just let the exhale take its time.

6. Notice three good moments

Look back over the day and find three things that were good, even slightly. The Buddha's Discourse on Blessings counts contentment and gratitude among the highest blessings of a good life. For a guided version, try our 5-minute gratitude meditation.

7. End with a kind wish

Close with a simple wish in your own words, or ours: May I rest well. May the people I love rest well. Then let the day go. Whatever is unfinished is written down, and the morning is for beginning again.

Questions people ask

What is a good evening ritual for sleep?

A short, repeated wind-down: put the day's tasks on paper, dim the lights, step away from screens, and spend a few minutes noticing what was good. Simple enough to do every night matters more than any single step.

How long before bed should I start?

Many people start about an hour before bed, but even ten minutes helps mark the end of the day.

Will an evening ritual cure insomnia?

No. Gentle habits can help you wind down, but they are not a treatment. If you have ongoing trouble sleeping, please talk to a doctor.
